On January 5, a man thought to be in his 50s named Manuel Nieblas López was diving for ax tripe—a scallop-like mollusk—with colleagues in Tobari Bay, located on the coast of Sonora state, when he was attacked and killed by a huge great white, Tracking Sharks reported. “He was diving when the animal attacked him, ripping off his head and biting both shoulders,” fisherman Jose Bernal, who witnessed the attack from the group’s boat, told the website....

The footage, captured by photographer Carlos Gauna and posted to his YouTube channel TheMalibuArtist, was filmed using a drone. The footage shows a great white shark swimming in the shallows with what appears to be a gaping injury at the top of its head. “When I first filmed this I wasn’t sure what to make of this injury. Stelios Petsas, a spokesperson for the Greek government, announced the plans on Monday, asserting that locations for the new facilities had already been identified, according to The Associated Press. Nine groups have teamed up to challenge the approval of a right-of-way permit for the 211-mile road, which would provide private mining companies access through the Northwest Alaska wilderness to the Ambler Mining District in the Brooks Range. The coalition, Trustees for Alaska, said in a statement that the green groups had filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Alaska against the July 23 decision made by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM)....

The Greenland ice sheet, in the Arctic, is the second largest ice sheet on the planet. It is three times the size of Texas (656,000 square miles), and covers most of Greenland, the world’s largest island. The sheet contains so much ice that if it was to melt in its entirety, global sea levels could rise 20 feet—drowning coastal cities like Miami. To calculate levels of ice loss on the Greenland ice sheet, the study’s authors used a combination of satellite data, ground measurements and climate models....
