Jarome Bell is seeking to challenge incumbent Democratic Representative Elaine Luria in November’s midterm elections but he will first have to defeat three Republican opponents, including the perceived frontrunner, state Senator Jen Kiggans. Bell made headlines in September when he tweeted about a controversial audit of the 2020 presidential election that was carried out by the firm Cyber Ninjas in Maricopa County, Arizona and ultimately affirmed President Joe Biden’s win there....

The legislation, titled the Holding the Chinese Communist Party Accountable for Infecting Americans Act of 2020, is the latest move by Republican lawmakers who seek to blame China for the U.S. becoming the global leader in cases and deaths from the virus. Cotton, a frequent critic of China, said that actions by the country’s government had helped the virus spread beyond its borders. “By silencing doctors and journalists who tried to warn the world about the coronavirus, the Chinese Communist Party allowed the virus to spread quickly around the globe,” Cotton said in a statement....

“Relitigating 2020 is a recipe for disaster in 2022,” Hutchinson said on NBC’s Meet the Press. “Let’s talk about the future. The election has passed, it’s been certified, the states made decisions on the integrity of each of their elections and made improvements where need be,” he added. The comments followed host Chuck Todd asking Hutchinson about a statement Trump made Wednesday about the 2020 election. “If we don’t solve the Presidential Election Fraud of 2020 (which we have thoroughly and conclusively documented), Republicans will not be voting in ‘22 or ‘24....

“His entire administration is telling everyone to take it seriously while he tells everybody to not take it seriously,” Hogan told The New York Times, adding that Trump’s messaging “has been really bad.” “It is mixed messages—bouncing from one message to the other,” the Republican governor said. Newsweek reached out to the White House for comment but did not hear back in time for publication. This is not the first time Hogan has criticized the remarks made by Trump during the pandemic....

Hogan spoke to CNN on Sunday, praising Republican Governor-elect Glenn Youngkin in Virginia for running a campaign that distanced itself from Trump while also maintaining the backing of the former president’s supporters. “There’s no question, Glenn Youngkin did a good job of not alienating that base, but Trump never stepped foot in the state, which was a great thing for Glenn Youngkin and for the country,” Hogan said on State of the Union....

Trump is widely believed to be planning another presidential run, with an announcement rumored as soon as Tuesday. Given the historic underperformance of the GOP in last week’s midterm elections, and particularly the candidates endorsed by the former president, doubts about Trump’s future have begun to grow and many in the party are calling for him to move on. On Sunday, Chris Sununu, the Republican governor of New Hampshire, appeared on ABC’s This Week to discuss the midterm election results....

A majority of the audience at the Cobb County, Georgia, policy conference were reportedly seen not wearing masks at the event, which was highlighted by GOP politicians and pastors praising the president. Video of the event showed few people wearing face coverings or practicing social distancing in the Cobb Galleria’s main ballroom. At least one speaker at the event, Tennessee Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn, had recently been in close contact with Trump over the past week....

In a public briefing on Tuesday, a journalist asked McCarthy if he could characterize how the Republican party might look different moving beyond President Trump. “Well, you’re assuming President Trump is moving on,” McCarthy began before asserting his belief that Trump will continue to play a part in the nation “regardless of whether he’s president again or he’s citizen Trump.” As such, McCarthy echoed the sentiment of numerous congressional Republicans who continue to suggest that Trump could still successfully contest the election results by having hundreds of thousands of ballots in several key swing states thrown out so that he is declared president-elect rather than his Democratic opponent, President-elect Joe Biden....

Lindell, along with former President Donald Trump, has been a key promoter of the conspiracy theory that the last presidential election was “rigged” or “stolen” in favor of President Joe Biden. No evidence has emerged substantiating the allegation, and many Republican officials across the country have repeatedly countered the false claims about the election. Idaho’s Secretary of State Lawerence Denney and Attorney General Lawrence Wasden, both Republicans, sent a letter to Lindell on Tuesday demanding that he “promptly remove all false statements about Idaho’s elections” from his website, the Idaho Statesman reported on Thursday....

President Joe Biden has called for sending $4 billion over four years to Central American nations—where most migrants coming to the U.S. border hail from—in a bid to curb poverty, corruption and violence there. The bulk of undocumented migrants arriving at the southern border with Mexico travel up from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, all of which have high crime rates and high levels of poverty. In addition to addressing these root causes of migration, the funds would go toward setting up centers throughout the region that could be used to apply for refugee resettlement in the U....

She offered a nod towards conviction on Thursday while ripping into the commander-in-chief’s inciting last week’s Capitol riot. “On the day of the riots, President Trump’s words incited violence, which led to the injury and deaths of Americans—including a Capitol Police officer—the desecration of the Capitol and briefly interfered with the government’s ability to ensure a peaceful transfer of power,” Murkowski said in a statement....

Speaking to Mike Allen during an interview for Axios on HBO that aired on Sunday, Sen. Cassidy said former President Trump could fall at the first hurdle and not be selected as the Republican nominee. Explaining his position, Sen. Cassidy said: “President Trump is the first President, on the Republican side at least, to lose the House, the Senate and the Presidency in four years. Elections are about winning.”...
