Having a pet is an incredibly rewarding experience and the vast majority of us think of them as family, but when traveling abroad sometimes we have to leave them behind.

A survey by Civic Science of more than 2,250 U.S. residents found that owning a pet may stop almost a quarter of people from taking a trip, while 8 percent say their pets would definitely stop them from going away. Some 15 percent of pet owners said they frequently avoid flying due to their pet.

While most of us would love to take our pets everywhere, including to work, we do sometimes have to leave them behind.

Battersea Dogs Home suggests that if you’re going to leave your pet with someone while on holiday, check their ID tag and microchip are working and up to date. They recommend temporarily updating the details with where they will be while you’re away.

“Think about what your dog likes and if there are any items in particular that usually help them to relax,” they suggest to keep your dog calm using routing.

“Their favorite bedding, treats and toys will help them to feel a little more at home during their stay.” Crate training can also help, according to Battersea Dogs Home, as it can “provide them with a safe and familiar space until they get used to their new environment. If your dog doesn’t usually use a crate, you will need to teach them how by building up a positive association with using a dog crate first.”
