Devlin Robinson, the GOP candidate for Pennsylvania’s 37th District state senate seat, said he noticed a wallet laying on Cochran Road last week that led him to investigate the precariously placed item.

Upon opening up the wallet, Robinson said he was stunned to see the driver’s license of his opponent, Democratic state senate incumbent Pam Iovino.

The Pittsburgh-area political rivals, who will face off in the upcoming November 3 general election, posed together for a Facebook photo and shared a laugh after Robinson returned Iovino’s wallet Tuesday.

Robinson, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps, posted a note on social media Wednesday saying he was happy to help out Iovino, a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

“Semper Fi(nd). I knew we’d meet up sooner or later, but what a set of circumstances,” Robinson wrote on Facebook, showing a photo of he and Iovino standing together with the returned wallet. “[A] driver’s license with a familiar face and, what do you know. I was happy to return this item, a bit battered by passing traffic, to Pam Iovino. She was thrilled to have it back and I was delighted to help out a fellow veteran. Sometimes, it’s great to put the politics aside.”

“I’m grateful that my wallet was returned so quickly, it really goes to show what a small world local politics can be. I’m looking forward to a spirited campaign this Fall,” Iovino told Newsweek via email Saturday afternoon.

Iovino, who first assumed her state senate office in 2019, thanked her Republican challenger on Facebook Wednesday.

“Lost my wallet. Ugh! Luckily my cell phone number was in it. Look who found my wallet. Thanks, Devlin!” she wrote.

Robinson defeated Jeff Neff in the Republican primary on June 2 for the 37th District by 17 percentage points in order to move on and face Iovino in the November general election. Iovino ran unopposed in the Democratic primary, which was also held last month. Iovino narrowly won the 2019 special general election for the state senate seat, which has alternated between members of both parties in recent years.

Iovino has repeatedly stressed the importance of wearing facial masks during the coronavirus pandemic on her social media outlets, which both she and Robinson were doing when he returned her lost wallet last week.

Newsweek reached out to Robinson for additional remarks.
