The best horror movies on Netflix
#Alive
A breakout hit when it was released onto Netflix last month, #Alive is a Korean zombie film that sees a man trapped in his home as a deadly virus ravages the world outside. Who knows why that has proven popular in 2020, a year where people are trapped in their homes as a deadly virus ravages the world outside. Say what you want about the coronavirus, but at least it does not try to eat your brain.
The Evil Dead
An absolute horror classic, The Evil Dead launched what is perhaps the only perfect horror trilogy. Though it is missing the sick slapstick of The Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, it still has plenty for those who prefer their horror on the ghoulishly funny side—and you will never be able to look at a tree the same way after watching it.
Green Room
One of the most recent film on this list, Green Room is already proving to be a modern classic of the genre. The movie, one of the last made by Anton Yelchin, sees him as part of a band whose gig at a neo-Nazi club goes very wrong, which sees them facing a far-right threat, led by Patrick Stewart in a rare but ripe villain role. Gory, grim and glorious.
It Comes at Night
Another movie about a pandemic, It Comes at Night is on the more indie end of the spectrum. Coming from arthouse darlings A24 (who also released Midsommar, Hereditary and The Witch), the movie stars Joel Edgerton as a father trying to keep himself and his teenage son safe in the woods. Spoiler alert—he isn’t entirely successful…
Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Halloween is not just a time for quality, well-made horror movies. It is also a time to appreciate the greatest scary schlock, the b-movies that were horror’s bread and butter for decades. Killer Klowns from Outer Space is a king of cult horror, with generations coming to love its rubber-suited circus-styled space invaders since its first release in 1988.
Poltergeist
Not the critically savaged 2015 Poltergeist, but the 1982 horror that brought together two unlikely collaborators; king of family entertainment Steven Spielberg and Tobe Hooper, the director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which at the time was still banned in the U.K. The result is a film that combined both of their strengths into a movie that offered fear for all the family, which shows a family fighting off malevolent spirits in their own home.
The Silence of the Lambs
The Silence of the Lambs was billed as a psychological thriller rather than a horror, with the studio thought it being billed as a horror might stop it getting Oscars. This ruse worked, with the film becoming the fifth and so far final film to get the “big five” of Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay. However, it definitely is a horror—it features a cannibal, plus two different characters who kill another character and wear their skin, after all.
Sleepy Hollow
With the world feeling full of horrors right now, some viewers may want a bit more historical distance from the events of the films they watch this Halloween. Those viewers can watch 1999’s Sleepy Hollow, Tim Burton’s take on the classic 1820 short story of a headless horseman in a sleepy village.
Unfriended (available October 16)
More and more of our lives are being conducted on Zoom, making this 2014 movie in which a sinister spirit invades Skype increasingly prescient. One of the first films to take place entirely within one of the potential victim’s computer screens, it might also be the best film in the so-called “digital found footage genre”—and one of the few films that is actually improved by watching on your laptop screen.
The Witches
Roald Dahl’s classic story of a group of witches in disguise on a mission to murder children has been remade in a movie starring Anne Hathaway (coming to HBO Max this month), but it will be tough for it to beat the 1990 version. Director Nicolas Roeg was used to making adult-orientated movies like Don’t Look Now and The Man Who Fell to Earth, and his style does not change much in the transition from adult to kids, creating a film that traumatized many a young viewer hoping for a fun Roald Dahl adaptation.
