Beat the stigma. Registering as an organ donor will not affect the care you receive, and it won’t change what happens to your body after death–you can still be cremated, or have a funeral with an open casket.

Register. To find out how to donate, go to donatelife.net and click on your state. In any region, it helps to carry an organ-donor card. Download one at organdonor.gov.

Tell family members. Make sure relatives know your wishes, especially if your state doesn’t have a registry. If you choose to donate, take steps to make sure it happens.
