The preliminary examination in 67th District Court will determine if the case proceeds to trial.

Cleaves, 38, is accused of sexually assaulting a 24-year-old woman in a motel near Flint in 2015. Prosecutors say Cleaves met the woman at a golf outing in September, had drinks with her and took her to the motel, where they allege he kept her against her will.

Cleaves, who faces numerous felony charges that are punishable by up to 15 years in prison, maintains he is innocent. 

Cleaves led Michigan State to a national championship in 2000. He then played six seasons in the NBA. Most recently, Cleaves has hosted a basketball show for SiriusXM NBA Radio and has been a college basketball analyst for CBS Sports Network.
