How did this all start?

It was an office thing. We kept trying to outdo each other–“Look what I found, something grosser than that.” I’m not so easily shocked, but there was a bag from Ireland that surprised me. It was buffalo-flavored. Not buffalo wings. Buffalo!

Any other unpleasant surprises?

Humpty Dumpty Sour Cream & Clam. They’re apparently a Maine thing. Everyone who tries one thinks they’re bad, but keeps eating them. There’s something addictive in them.

Every place has its own thing?

Any time you cross borders, what’s normal in flavors is surprising. In Canada there are ketchup chips everywhere. In England you have prawn cocktail chips, roast beef and mustard, ham and pickle.

Can you always make the leap?

I found squid chips in an Asian grocery store. They were Styrofoamy. Terrible! Squid probably doesn’t belong in chips.
