In order to change who can reply, tap the three-dot menu on a specific tweet. After that, search for the option in the menu that shows up. Either everyone can apply, only people you follow can reply, or only people you mention in your tweet can reply. This new feature is available on iOS, Android, and the web.
Here are a number of other features Twitter has added in 2021.
Twitter implemented a new feature called Fleets in February of 2021 which mimics the story feature which can be found on both Facebook and Instagram.
In March 2021, Twitter parted ways with the popular video-streaming app, Periscope. On Periscope’s Medium page, they released this statement regarding the departure.
“The truth is that the Periscope app is in an unsustainable maintenance-mode state, and has been for a while. Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen declining usage and know that the cost to support the app will only continue to go up over time. Leaving it in its current state isn’t doing right by the current and former Periscope community or by Twitter.”
Twitter has given users the option to choose who they can reply to. Prior to sending a tweet, users will have three options to choose from. A user can reply to everyone, only people the user follows, or only people the user mentions in the tweet. Suzanne Xie, director of product management stated that this change benefits the user overall.
“Sometimes people are more comfortable talking about what’s happening when they can choose who can reply,” Xie said.
Twitter will start accepting applications for verification again sometime in 2021. According to Twitter, a potentially verified account must fall under one of these categories: Government, Companies, Brands and Non- Profit Organizations, News, Entertainment, Sports, and Activists, Organizers, and Other Influential Individuals.
Finally, Twitter has cracked down on eliminating accounts that promote violence. Twitter said this regarding the recent change.
“Glorifying violent acts could inspire others to take part in similar acts of violence. Additionally, glorifying violent events where people were targeted on the basis of their protected characteristics (including: race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease) could incite or lead to further violence motivated by hatred and intolerance.”
