While gamers debate over which to put on their sheff — Xbox Series X or the PlayStation 5 — for most, it’s almost always about the games over the hardware. While there will be updates and upgrades made to the user interface, tech and more for both consoles, it comes down to what disc you’re slipping in or downloading to the hard drive.
As is custom with new-gen releases, there’s not a whole lot new or original with both consoles dropping this week. If you still have a backlog of Xbox One games, then you’re in luck, because the XSX will be fully backwards compatible to last generation and will even be able to play select Xbox 360 and Xbox Original games. PS5 owners will have the same luxury for PS4 games, but nothing past that.

But if you’re looking to slap some next-gen content into your next-gen console, then you might be left wanting more: There’s not a whole lot of new stuff coming to XSX or PS5 on launch day, at least not in the way of new or original IP. That list is significantly shorter.
Below is a list of launch titles, announced games and more projected to come out over the coming years:
Xbox Series X games at launch
In addition to all Xbox One games, there will be 30 games available at launch for the Xbox Series X. Not all games are Triple-A titles (Battletoads, for example), but there will be a selection of them at launch and the weeks following: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Watch Dogs: Legion and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War are all out or coming out within a few days of the XSX release.
All games below are listed by announced release date, and all release dates are subject to change:
PS5 games at launch
With the PS5 releasing two days later than the Xbox Series X (Nov. 12), some titles will be a few days late (Assassin’s Creed), but still available at launch.
There is also a large slate of games scheduled for 2021 and later which have been announced, but don’t have a specific date attached to it. Below is a list of launch titles, expected to release titles and what we know is coming, someday, eventually:
