Warnock is seeking election to a full term as a U.S. senator in one of the most closely watched races in the country after no candidate achieved 50 percent of the vote on November 8, forcing a runoff election.
Polls have suggested the final result will also be extremely close but bookmakers Betfair, which operates the world’s largest online betting exchange, told Newsweek on Tuesday that the Democrat is the clear favorite.
With one week to go until the Georgia Senate runoff election on December 6, Betfair is offering odds of 1/10 on Warnock to win, while Walker’s odds stood at 4/1.
The odds of a Democratic victory have also improved over the past week, according to Betfair spokesperson, Sam Rosbottom.
“The Democrats have always been in a very strong position to win the Georgia Senate runoff, with odds of 1/7 last week and they’ve been steadily improving their chances over the last few days, according to the betting, and are now 1/10 to win,” Rosbottom told Newsweek.
“A week ago, the Republicans were 10/3 outsiders to claim victory, and have seen their odds drift to 4/1 as Democrats strengthen their position,” he said.
Recent polls show a tight contest in the battle for the one remaining seat in the Senate, though the outcome of the election will not determine which party controls the chamber after Democrats won a narrow majority in the November 8 midterms.
A Phillips Academy poll conducted among 862 likely voters from November 26 to 27 showed Walker with a one point lead over Warnock, while a Frederick Polls survey conducted among 939 likely voters from November 23 to 26 showed both candidates on 50 percent.
Warnock took part in six separate public campaign events over the Thanksgiving holiday, including a “Souls to the Polls” march on Sunday, while Walker held no public events during the holiday.
The Republican returned to the campaign trail on Monday with events in Toccoa and Cumming.
Warnock was elected to the Senate in a special election in January, 2021 where he defeated Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler in the state which has long been seen as deep red.
A Warnock victory would further boost the Democratic majority in the Senate following midterm elections where President Joe Biden’s party performed better than expected.
